Congratulations on a fine accomplishment – this is inspiration! Hope you enjoy copious amounts of vitamin D and Tanqueray – you have certainly earned it.

It's Monday....Blog day for me! First let me start by saying WAAYYY TO GO to our very own Mr. Ironman-DAN! I know you are recovering but I'm sure you represented Illinois and Team HRMS well. How did that climb on the BEAST go? I hope Cheryl didn't have to disown you but even if you did get off the saddle for that hill...much respect from me because hills are NO JOKE and with a name like the BEAST you had to be in Ironman mode for sure.

Now, my update includes the reason why I am now "da fish"-I officially learned how to swim this past weekend. Funny story...I met this guy while working out and I mentioned to him that I was training for my first triathalon. I said I felt like I wasn't anywhere near where I should be because I haven't started logging meters in the pool AT ALL! He said guess what-I'm a swim coach-after I knocked him over with a big push, he said I'll help you out-SO TO THE POOL we went for swim 101. After only 25 minutes of basic instruction, I was breathing like a mad woman in a marathon or something. Swimming is FREAKING HARD and might I add, my sinuses and nose did not appreciate the influx of chlorine I kept inhaling trying to get that breathing/timing thing down. Now with my new friend he helped calculate how much I need to be swimming in order to breeze thru my own event and the goal was like 60 laps!!!! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT!-I was like EZ killa, WHOA Chief, stand down soldier-are you sure about that 60 thing, turns out yep (kinda)...he said train higher so when I do 400 it will be easy-DUH but I'll roll with it though. So I say let's break this thing down to every day, my daily goal-ADD 2. I'm starting off with 4 laps and everyday he suggested I add 2 laps so that by the time I get to 60, the 400 meters for the event (which is less than 60) will be easy.

My problem is a tense up a bit too much so we gotta RELAX and feel the water, flow with the stroke. He made it look so easy-SHOW OFF! Either way, I am excited to get in the water today. I feel like I have a new toy and goal but I tell you this swimming is what will make or break me here. I'm working on conditioning myself for that part of the event. I'm still a work in progress but I am confident I can do it! It will get easier once I feel the FLOW.

So if you see me in a pool just holla out...make sure YOU ADD 2! It keeps me honest ha ha ha. Hope to see you all on the bike trail this week-train strong. Peace ~C

Dan,
Congratulations on finishing the St. Croix 70.3 earlier today. I hope you are very proud of yourself -- on the road for almost 7 hours straight. Hopefully you had some fun too and held your own against all the other CEO's.

See you back in Chicago soon.

HEY Team!!! Happy Monday...and the saga continues. Team AA thanks for the words of encouragement:) This past week was tough and not because of any training schedule. It was the beautiful weather-I just wanted to sit under the sun in a lazy chair and relax, read a book or rest. How about that for a twist-and you thought I was going to talk about how tough the workouts/training was all week-PSYCHE,Nope-LOL. I recently participated in a spin class at a new club/time and the instructor is doing her first triathlon on Mother's Day weekend-what a trooper. We talked over rpms and she totally encouraged me to GET IN THE POOL. She said swim like crazy because that is what is the hardest to recover from in your transitions (and here I was thinking of a million other things that are probably the hardest to do LOL) Swimming isn't something I have done consistently-I like cycling so if I was training for the Tour de France, I'd be right on target, ha ha ha but the pool hasn't been on my radar yet. My knees have been feeling it so maybe it's time to take some pressure off of them for a bit.

So I am making a training shift-CHERYL WHERE ARE YOU ?-I need the basics and I want to start making sure I get those laps in now. Things are clear, my biggest challenge will be the swim but not because I can't because I've never done it competitively before. I plan on giving my hair stylist a few weeks off so I can rack up some meters in the pool. All that being said, I'll see you on da deep end-VAZQUEZ out!!!!!! : )

Carolyn keep on trying...the end result will be fantastic.

Hello Team...Yes, Sacrifice is right! I am baaaack-I caught a terrible cold and I have been recovering over the last 2 weeks. I have this Kathleen Turner thing going now with the deep raspy voice but you don't have to talk to train...ha ha ha. I am getting back into the swing of things and these first few days have been rough. My breathing and timing have been off but I'm a work in progress-right? I keep focusing on the end goal which is to FINISH. Today was a hard day, that 5am roll call is no joke but in the end it will be worth it. My constant reminder of sacrifice includes sleep-did I mention I am NOT a morning person though I am willing to sacrifice that today so I can finish "tomorrow". So, I just wanted to "connect" with the HRMS crew-I may have been down but I'm not out. Now that the weather is warming up, I'm sure we will all be on the happy trails to the finish line. Soak up the sun and stay safe!

Hi there..It has taken me some time to chime in but I'm still here. I must admit I was disappointed that I wasn't selected for the "A" team. I have never done a triathlon and I really wanted to do things in a BIG way. In my line of business, organ and tissue donation, I work specifically with the African-American and Latino communities. There is a high risk component for health issues like obesity, high blood pressure and hypertension and I wanted to be the shining example of what can happen and what you can do if you just try it. Be proactive and live a better life. Meanwhile, I have been training....5:45AM! spin classes at LA Fitness in Alsip and downtown Chicago on canal. 6:45pm pilates, running, Bikram Yoga and racquetball, racquetball, racquetball (my favorite hobby). In all of this, I worked through my disappointment and began to FEEL BETTER. My jeans are fitting without me having to hold my breath while laying across the bed-I have more energy, my blood pressure has improved, my skin is clearer my asthma/breathing is better and I remembered why I originally got involved-to improve MY OWN health. Over the years I have let myself slip a bit and I wanted to get in better shape-so it's "GO" time, now or never. Also, as a national racquetball player, the additional weight gain wasn't helping my game at all either. So I say this mantra everyday at 4:45AM!(I'm so not a morning person) to get me going-Decide.Commit.Succeed. I made the decision to do this, I am committed to seeing it through and you know the rest....Maybe along the way I will be that example and will tell the story of how I ended up finishing my first triathlon because some guy named "Dan" at HRMS that helps my company with benefits did it and said he would help me do it too...Thanks for the opportunity and the cool yoga mat(I was just about to get one)-smiles. I will keep you posted on my progress. See you on the training path....

I went swimming for the first time in a while yesterday. Let me tell you something, that was a killer. If there are people out there who know something about proper swimming form and how to breath while freestyle swimming, I would be so grateful to learn something from you. I will see you all on the 9th.

Thank you!

The road to the triathlon will be a journey to remember and the triathlon will be the trophy.

I have been running and working out for 14 years on my own. This is my first time to be a part of such a great group and to have the resources to learn how to train the proper way, with-out wasting any more time with trial and errors. I look forward to every meeting and to see everyone. My very first run will be at the NCO Spring Ahead 5k & 10k run at Calamos Investments in Naperville on April 20th. I hope to see some of the HRMS Team members there. Let's Rock & Run. Whoo wooo.

Don't think of this as a diet, but as a way of life.

Dennis Forst posted at 5:31pm on March 19, 2008

There has not been a day that has gone by that someone hasn't asked me about the triathlon.  Some laugh with disbelief; some show encouragement.  All give motivation.

Thank you!
